Libya was under foreign rule for centuries until it gained independence in 1951.
Mu'ammar Muhammad al-Qadhafi, Libya's head of state since 1969 was overthrown after a large rebellion in 2011.
The National Transitional Council (NTC) was recognized as the political arm of the rebellion, as Libya's transitional government.
In August 2012, the NTC handed power to the country's newly elected National Congress.
In 2014, the National Congress, depleted the power and the country has since fallen into chaos. The Politics of Libya is in an uncertain state due to the collapse of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya

Executive power is vested in Colonel Muammar al-Qadhafi. Although he holds no formal position in the government, he is the highest authority and commander in chief of the armed forces.He functions along with a group of close associates, under the name Revolutionary Command Council, he controls all political decisions
Libya was divided into several small communities that were "mini-autonomous (self governed) States" within a State. These smaller States had control over their districts or areas and could make a range of decisions including how to portion oil and other funds. Within these mini States, the three main parts of Libya's democracy; namely; Local Committees, People's Congresses and Executive Revolutionary Councils.

The Constitutional Declaration is the current supreme law of Libya, which was introduced after the overthrow of the Gaddafi government in the Libyan Civil War. It was finalised on 3 August 2011 and is intended to remain in effect until a permanent constitution is written and confirmed. The document was publicly announced at a press conference of on the 10th of August.2011.
Governing party / ideological beliefs
On 17 December 2015 the House of Representatives and the New General National Congress signed a political agreement for a nine-member Presidential Council and a seventeen-member interim Government of National Accord with the intention of holding an elections within the next two years.The House of Representatives will continue to exist as a legislature and the advisory body, to be known as the State Council, formed by members nominated by the New General National Congress.
National front party (Liberal party):
The National Front Party was put together in May 2012. The party believes in a liberal and progressive ideology, and is known to be the "most liberal leaning of all in Congress," The party is the successor of the National Front for the Salvation of Libya, another anti-Gaddafi resistance movement formed in 1981. The National Front Party holds 3 seats in the General National Congress, giving it the position of third largest party. The Party is led by Mohamed al-Magariaf Served, the President of the GNC from 9 August 2012 to 28 May 2013.
